AYR BURNS CLUB MEETING 22ND SEPTEMBER 201

23/09/2016 00:13

Ayr Burns Club held the first meeting of the year on Wednesday 21st September at the Abbotsford Hotel, Ayr and what a wonderful get together it was.

Following a delightfully warm welcome from President, Kathleen Davey, the evening began with a rousing rendition of the Lochgelly Tawse by Jimmy  Law.  Jim, in full head teacher regalia, complete with a Lochgellie Tawse, had his audience in the palm of his hand.  His ‘blistering’ recitation certainly brought back many schoolday memories and I’m sure I saw a number of people sitting on their hands!  Martha gave the vote of thanks to Jim on behalf of Ayr Burns Club.

Our next guest speaker of the evening was the Club’s very own Fenella Coppestone.  One of Fenella’s passions is researching the life and works of Dr John Wolcot, an English Satirist, who wrote under the pseudonim of Peter Pindar.   Fenella gave a wonderfully descriptive talk about the life and times of Peter Pinder and his influence on Burns and complimented her talk with some of his works which were read with great gusto by Kathleen, Vice President Robbie McMahon, club members Barbara Martin and Vi Miller and Fenella herself.

Robbie gave the club’s vote of thanks to Fenella and the evening was rounded of with a presentation to our guests and our monthly raffle.

Tea and coffee was served before the gathering headed home with wishes of safe journeys.

The club would like to make mention of our delight at the arrival on the night of Tom and Margaret Morrell.
